Advent Worship Service Themes

We will be doing the “Un-lighting” of the Advent candles in order to Rethink Christmas and make room for listening for God.

Week 1: Hope / Rethinking Christmas: Rethink
Listen in the silence, Listen in the noise, Listen for the sound of the Spirit’s voice.

This year for Advent, we are “Rethinking Christmas” and this week we focus on how to Rethink. This is the first week of Advent and there are four candles lit! Did we get something wrong? Not at all. This year we are doing the work of quieting and silencing in order to listen for God’s voice. We begin with all the lights lit, then each week we will quiet another candle to illustrate our goal of focusing and listening only for God-with-us: Emmanuel.

Week 2: Peace / Rethinking Christmas: Renew
Listen in the silence, Listen in the noise, Listen for the sound of the Spirit’s voice.

This week we are “Rethinking Christmas” and focusing on how to Renew. Did you notice that while this is the second week in Advent, there are three candles lit? This year we are doing the work of quieting and silencing in order to listen for God’s voice. We began with all the lights lit, then each week we will quiet another candle to illustrate our goal of focusing and listening only for God-with-us: Emmanuel.

Week 3: Joy / Rethinking Christmas: Restore
Listen in the silence, Listen in the noise, Listen for the sound of the Spirit’s voice.

This 3rd week of Advent we are “Rethinking Christmas” and focusing on how to Restore. Now there are only two candles lit. This year we are doing the work of quieting and silencing in order to listen for God’s voice. We began with all the lights lit, then each week we will quiet another candle to illustrate our goal of focusing and listening only for God-with-us: Emmanuel.

Week 4: Love/ Rethinking Christmas: Refresh
Listen in the silence, Listen in the noise, Listen for the sound of the Spirit’s voice.

For the 4th week of Advent we are “Rethinking Christmas” and focusing on how to Refresh. This is our final Advent week and we have silenced all but one candle. We began with all the lights lit, then each week we have quieted another candle to illustrate our goal of focusing and listening only for God-with-us: Emmanuel. As we move into the season of Christmas, may the Christ candle warm your heart and light your path
